What is Total Communication?

Total Communication (TC) is philosophy of educating children with hearing loss that incorporates all means of communication; formal signs, natural gestures, fingerspelling, body language, listening, lipreading and speech. Children in TC programs typically wear hearing aids or cochlear implants.

Communication Choices

Overview of communication choices

American Sign Language (ASL)

A fully visual, natural language that has the same linguistic properties as spoken languages, with grammar that differs from English. ASL is expressed by movements of the hands and face.

Listening & Spoken Language (LSL)

Teaches infants and children with to listen and talk with the support of hearing technology such as hearing aids, or cochlear implants.
